All About Libertyville, IL

The area that now comprises Libertyville belonged to the Potawatomi people until 1829, when they sold much of their land in northern Illinois to the U.S. government. They left within the next few years, and the first non-indigenous resident was an English immigrant named George Vardin. He and his family lived where the Cook Park Library stands today.

The community that grew around his cabin was originally called Vardin’s Grove, but it was renamed — twice! First they tried to call it Independence Grove, but Illinois already had one of those, so they settled on Libertyville in 1837 when the new post office was registered. Then the town was briefly renamed to Burlington when it became the county seat, but it was Libertyville again by 1841, and so it remains today.

The Milwaukee Road train line reached Libertyville in 1881, after which the community exploded. However, the downtown area was largely destroyed by fire in 1895. The village board mandated that reconstruction be done with brick. As a result, our town has won a Great American Main Street Award for the unified time period and building material of the downtown buildings.
